Outdoor Pet Adventures

Summer is the best time of year to get outside and enjoy the outdoors with your pet.

Camping trips, lake days, fishing, hiking, swimming and so much more!

With all that summertime fun comes some summer safety concerns for your pet. Keep reading to discover some common tips to help protect your pet on all those outdoor adventures ahead.

Camping With Dogs

  • Flea & Tick prevention is key to ensure your dog has a great time on that camping trip coming up! Whether you decide to use chemical based protection or DIY natural remedies, it’s important to make sure your dog is ready to face the outdoors. Fleas and ticks carry harmful diseases such as Lyme Disease, so if you do happen to find one on your dog be sure to remove it immediately.
  • Make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date before you leave for vacation. This way you can have peace of mind knowing your pet is protected from common diseases and won’t pass anything on to other dogs he meets on his adventures.
  • Check the pet policies for the campground you will be visiting. It is smart to be in the know of the pet etiquette expected at National Parks and Campgrounds.
  • Keep your dog on a leash at all times and make sure his collar is on with updated ID tags with your contact information in case he gets lost in the woods.
Water Safety

Water Safety

  • Remember that not all dogs are natural born swimmers. If your dog does not know how to swim, do not force him. It’s best to start in the shallow end with his leash on until he gets comfortable. Keep the experience as positive as possible!
  • If taking your furry friend on a boat, make sure he has a lifejacket handy.
  • Be sure to check the current of a river or lake to make sure it is safe enough for your dog to get in.
